Protect Yourself from Immigration Scams
Immigration scams can be complex and confusing, especially if you hire someone who is not trustworthy or capable. This could lead to serious consequences, such as deportation from Canada for you or your loved ones. To safeguard yourself, it’s important to understand the different types of immigration scams and how to avoid them.
Tax Fraud Scams
These scammers often contact their targets by phone or text, requesting sensitive information or asking for money transfers via Internet banking.
Refund Scams
Scammers may contact victims via phone or email, requesting bank account details. Once they have this information, they could misuse it to steal money from your account.
Immigration Scams
Fraudsters falsely claim that immigrants have broken the law and demand payment to avoid deportation or jail. They may ask for payment through prepaid credit cards over the phone.
Best Practices to Avoid Canadian Immigration Scams
- Avoid Unauthorized Immigration Consultants
- Use Licensed RCIC’s- Seek guidance only from authorized RCICs who understand Canadian immigration laws, can legally represent you, and communicate with the Canadian government on your behalf.
- Always Sign a Retainer Agreement – An RCIC will always ask you to sign a Retainer Agreement to protect both parties
- Be Cautious of Unsolicited Communication- If you receive unexpected calls or emails requesting payments or personal information, be wary—it could be an immigration scam. Report such incidents to your local Canadian authorities
- Keep Copies of Your Documents- Always retain copies of all immigration documents submitted by your consultant.
- To Good to Be True –If it sounds too good to be true, it just might be. Make sure you feel comfortable with your RCIC and get a second opinion if you need it.
- Don’t Overspend– Unless you are in an extremely complicated situation that will take a significant amount of your representative’s time, if a consultant is asking you for tens of thousands of dollars, make sure you know what you are getting into.
Protect Your Personal Information
Do not share personal details, like passport photos, on websites promising immigration assistance. Scammers can misuse this information for identity theft.
Review Immigration Forms Carefully
Before signing any immigration forms, ensure they are complete and accurate.
